It hardly needs any “props” or guidance. All one needs is a quiet space and a firm determination to get relief from whatever ailment they are suffering from. Meditation has been helpful in curing several medical complaints such as blood pressure and stress.
The Past
Meditation has always been a part of the ancient cultures but was intrinsically associated with religion as religion had a firm grasp on almost all the facets of our life. Almost every culture has a tradition of using the rosary or other religious object to aid them in meditating. But, as reason and logic started developing, people started rejecting religion and everything associated with it as superstitious. We lacked the requisite knowledge to understand the ancient wisdom and reason behind meditation. Now, we know how it works and what it can cure.
The Present
The meditation techniques that we know of today came mainly from the East during the 1950s to the West when the search for an alternate and effective kind of medication and treatment was on. Meditation not only healed the sick, but also made the healthy healthier. Its simplicity was another reason for people thronging towards the meditation classes that were coming up by the dozen. Not every meditation technique is simple. Some are very tough and need training and practice. One might suffer dangerous consequences by doing them without proper guidance and training.
Things to Remember
The majority of the techniques are, however, very simple and can be done by the beginners successfully. There are several techniques for the children too to help them concentrate and study better. Kids often do not like their lessons and try to avoid them. But, if they are taught to meditate, they will improve in this aspect. They do not need any protracted methods or means. They can be done anywhere, anytime. But, it is best to mark a time for meditating. This will make it regular and you will be benefitted by this. The place where you meditate is also very important. Make sure that you are alone and the place is quiet. Try to keep the place uncluttered. It will help you concentrate better.
Making it Simple
Meditation requires you to sit quietly at a place and clear your mind of all earthly concerns. But this may be very difficult for a person. In order to make it simpler the following meditation techniques can be helpful.
Candle:
A lighted candle is a very good and popular means of focusing the attention. If the attention is focused on the flame, it becomes easier to clear the mind and calm the nerves. But sometimes people find it hazardous to have a candle burning in their room when they are not in a very alert state of mind. They can replace it with anything that will help them clear their minds. Even a dot on the other wall can be used to help the mind in focusing.
Sound:
A sound can also help you to clear your mind. You can play your favorite song in the room. Just make sure that the music is not too loud otherwise it will only distract you. You can also have a Hemi Sync CD playing in the meditation room. They are specially designed music which helps the mind to work better by synchronizing both the parts of the brain. Some people find the sound of running water very soothing. They can have a portable water fountain in their room.
