Cleansing Diets: Just celebrity hype or do they really work?

 

When many people hear about  cleansing diets, they automatically picture a stick-thin celebrity in conjunction with an extreme colon cleansing diet or something similar. Celebrity diets often use hype and focus on short term results that are impossible to maintain over a period of time.

Harsh diets like colon cleansing can even be harmful and often have negative side effects like cramps, nausea, bloating and vomiting or even produce more serious risks such as dehydration and bowel perforation or infection. Fasting programs such as the Master Cleanse, also known as The Lemonade Diet, can also have a dark side.

Extreme Diets Are Not the Answer

The Master Cleanse diet (and other starvation diets) are lacking in all of the essential nutrients your body needs in order to perform daily activities. Exercise is not part of its prescription because physical activity would be nearly impossible on such a diet. In addition, a long period of fasting can ultimately slow your body’s metabolism and lead you to gain more weight in the future.

On the other hand, a gentle whole body cleansing diet is not harmful and can, in fact, improve your health. A whole body cleansing diet generally doesn’t contain any laxatives or diuretics. Instead, they nourish the body by providing it with the essential nutrients it needs to return to its natural balance. And uses herbs and other nutrients to support the body’s natural detoxification process and help it eliminate harmful toxins and impurities.

It is important to ensure you are giving your body enough fiber (this is one of the problems with juice only detoxing) as well as providing support to help your body eliminate waste more efficiently.
